From our importer, Red Fox:

"The Alto Inambari subregion, situated in Puno’s Sandia Valley, produces some of the most distinct and coveted coffees in the world. The geography of Puno is defined by dramatic contrasts, ranging from deep tropical jungles to the icy peaks of the Andes. Located at nearly 4,000 meters above sea level, it ranks as the fifth-highest city in the world. Despite extreme altitudes and low temperatures, the Andes provide unique biodiversity and mineral-rich, fertile soil ideal for specialized cultivation.

Reaching the Sandia jungle requires a five-hour journey from Juliaca. This area’s tropical climate and altitudes exceeding 1,600 meters above sea level create the optimal environment for the diverse and superb coffee subregions that have made Puno notable.

The heart of this area is the Alto Inambari district, named for hosting the highest reaches of the Inambari River, with elevations climbing to nearly 3,000 meters. The small community of Yanahuaya is located within this district.

Red Fox has worked directly with the producers in this region for many years, providing access to more profitable, differentiated markets and offering competitive prices. Before this partnership, the market options for local farmers were severely limited by Puno’s remote and rugged geography.

By starting with a small group of producers and growing over time, Red Fox has established a stable opportunity for economic improvement in a famously challenging but high-quality region. Through this collaboration, we have helped build Puno’s global reputation as a source of some of the world’s finest coffee."
